TENDON INJURIES

Tendinitis, or tendon injuries are common among all ages and are usually caused during activity. Tendinitis is the medical term for “itis” of the tendon, or inflammation of the tendon. Inflammation occurs when your body is trying to recover or heal. If you have sudden or acute inflammation, you may notice redness, pain, and swelling. Tendon injuries often occur from sudden motion like tripping, moving your foot in a fast awkward position, or high-intensity exercise without warm-up. Tendon injuries can result in tendon tears, tendon weakness, and tendon ruptures. For emergencies, we always recommend urgent treatment in an urgent care or emergency room. If you have an isolated foot and ankle issue, you can also make a same-day appointment with a podiatrist who can evaluate you quickly and treat you immediately.

To prevent tendon injuries we recommend appropriate shoe gear for activities and proper stretching and training.

To treat tendon injuries depending on the severity, we often provide braces, casts, crutches or a cane to prevent motion of the tendon while it heals. After initial healing, physical therapy may be required to return you to your previous activity level.
